Summoned home, Cambridge mathematician Mycroft Holmes, must reason with his teenage brother, Sherlock, who has fallen in with unsavory characters and taken to strange activities. Their father, a distracted intellectual, is less distressed by Sherlock’s cocaine use than his single-minded pursuit of “particulars,” putting him at risk of becoming an Aristotelian. Older brother Mycroft attempts to turn him from detective work to a higher vocation. But Sherlock is intent upon solving their mother’s murder and Mycroft reluctantly agrees to assist.
Based on characters created by Arthur Conan Doyle, “The Aristotelian” is a short story of young and impetuous Sherlock Holmes pursuing clues while a more thoughtful Mycroft unsuccessfully tries to keep him out of trouble. All the while, a far more subtle mind is pursuing a murderous agenda.

Mycroft Holmes has a problem. Much to his father's dismay, Mycroft's little brother Sherlock has become an Aristotelian, collecting samples of dirt, plants and even cigar ash to bring empirical science to criminal investigations. The focus of Sherlock's investigation is the unsolved murder of their mother. In no time at all, Mycroft becomes a party to bringing the killer to justice. What initially appears to be a simple case, grows increasingly complicated as the brothers learn more of their mother's activities in the final days of her life. If the revelation of the killer's identity is surprising, the ending is nothing short of astounding. In "The Aristotelian," Steve Poling builds a convincing prequel to the Sherlock Holmes canon. He constructs the late Victorian world of young Sherlock, piling mystery upon mystery along the way. Fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will appreciate the way Mr. Poling recreates the language and social mores of the time. I look forward to the next installment.

The Aristotelian The Secret Archives of the Diogenes Club Book 0 eBook Steve Poling Joanne Renaud Reviews
I have always enjoyed following the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Steve Poling's book gives us a look at a much younger Holmes, trying to solve the mystery of his mother's murder. The text is fast paced and a fun read.
A charming and ingenious short story! If there's one criticism I could make it's that it is too short. This could very well have been made a novella with a little back-story and fleshing out of characters. Even so, it's streets ahead of some other Holmes pastiches kindle offers.
I enjoyed this story very much. I believe the author really got the personalities of Sherlock, Mycroft and their father. I dislike stories that incorrectly use characters we know and love. The personalities of Sherlock and Mycroft flowed from what I know about them and the stories I've read. The writing is clean and flows well.
I love anything Holmesian. This story is no different. This features Mycroft coming home to
help his younger brother Sherlock stop his investigation of their mother's murder. However
Mycroft begins to find out things and secrets before they come to the shocking conclusion of
who really killed their mother. . . Must read for anyone!
This was a very good Sherlock Holmes short story. It covers a part of Holmes's life that I have never seen in print before - the time when he and his brother Mycroft were still living with their father. Very unique point of view. The author does a good job of setting this stage and exploring the interaction between the 3 men.
I'd highly recommend this short story to all fans of Sherlock Holmes!
Steve Poling's tale of an early adventure of Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes is a real gem. The setting, characters and action all ring true and the story pulls you into this very well-crafted world. Although obviously lacking Watson because of the time when this story is set, Mycroft proves to be a delightful narrator and a truly great character. I loved this tale and hope Mr. Poling pens many more Mycroft-narrated adventures.
Fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will find The Aristotelian a worthy successor / prequel to the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries. I was immediately charmed by the language, the vocabulary, the patterns of both narrative and dialogue, and the portrayals of the young detective and his elder brother. The mystery, too, is inspired and fully matches the style of such classics as The Red Headed League or The Adventure of the Speckled Band (two of my favourites). I fully intend to gift this story to my dad, who has long been a fan of Sherlock Holmes, and enjoy it again in future, as well as further works by the inestimable Steve Poling.
